What Every Kid Needs To Know About FIFO: A-Z Edition
What Every Kid Needs To Know About FIFO:
A-Z Edition

FIFO is more than planes, high-vis and photos from the airport. It’s a whole world of people, jobs and routines that most kids never really get to see – even when someone they love works away.
What Every Kid Needs To Know About FIFO – The A–Z Edition is a children’s book that opens that world up for every kid. From A to Z, young readers meet real‑life role models, discover the jobs that keep sites running, and see the many different families and cultures that make FIFO possible.
“What Every Kid Needs To Know About FIFO is a children’s book celebrating diversity, inclusion and career opportunities within Australia’s FIFO workforce.”
Vicky pellowe, author & founder of tffp
What’s inside?
Each letter of the alphabet explores a different part of FIFO life – from airports, pre-starts and mess halls through to rosters, robots and R&R – in plain language kids can actually understand and talk about.
Inside the book, kids discover:
- Real FIFO careers – from pilots, nurses and chefs to engineers, safety advisors, environmental scientists and ROV technicians
- Women in leadership and STEM – girls and women in hard hats, on tools and in technical roles
- Community and connection – the small routines, traditions and “little things” families do to stay close, even when someone is working away
- Safe, sustainable operations – how FIFO workers help keep sites safer, smarter and more respectful of Country and resources.

Who it’s for (every kid) and why it matters
This book was deliberately written as an education and diversity resource, not just for kids already part of a FIFO family. It works in:
Classrooms and Libraries
As a curriculum‑friendly text for exploring community, jobs, STEM, gender equality and respectful workplaces
Homes
To make sense of FIFO routines, answer “where do you go?” questions and give kids a way to talk about missing someone
Industry and ESG Programs
As a tangible resource companies can place in family rooms, camps and local schools to show they’re serious about inclusion and family‑aware work
Community Programs
To reduce stigma and isolation for FIFO families by normalising their experience and giving everyone shared language
Why this matters:
- Closes the representation gap: most FIFO kids’ books still centre “Dad” as the worker; this one deliberately shows women, diverse cultures and non‑parent workers across many roles.
- Builds a future talent pipeline: it positions STEM and resources careers as exciting and attainable for all children, particularly girls, helping them imagine themselves in these jobs early on.
- Strengthens family and community wellbeing: it reduces isolation by making FIFO life easier to explain and understand, for both FIFO and non‑FIFO kids.
Impact to date
from the book launch in february 2026of surveyed participants agreed the book helps challenge the idea that FIFO and STEM jobs are mainly for men.
said they were more likely to talk with children about future STEM or FIFO‑related careers after engaging with the book and launch event.
of FIFO workers and family members who attended the launch said the event helped them feel more seen, understood or connected.
women make up only around 28% of Australia’s STEM workforce, so books that show girls in STEM and FIFO roles are still pushing against a very real representation gap.
